APPELLATION : MARGAUX
The history and renown of Château Margaux owe as much to the genius of its terroir as to the remarkable individuals who have shaped it over five centuries, from steward Berlon, one of the first to understand the importance of soil differences, to the Mentzelopoulos family, who restored the estate’s glory from 1977 onwards. In 1705, the London Gazette advertised the first auction of the Bordeaux First Growths: 230 barrels of “Margose.” Today, under the stewardship of Alexis Mentzelopoulos as CEO and his sister Alexandra as President of the Supervisory Board, Château Margaux enters a new chapter while remaining the undisputed benchmark of its appellation.
GOOD TO KNOW
Château Margaux was the only estate to receive a perfect score of 20/20 in the 1855 Classification. After a period of decline in the 1970s, André Mentzelopoulos acquired it in 1977 and restored it to its former glory. The neo-Palladian château, built in 1810 by architect Louis Combes, is a listed historic monument.
